  • Where is Camp Spehar located?

    • Camp Spehar will be hosted at Camp Villere National Guard Base.  The address is: 34845 Grantham College Dr. Slidell, LA 70460

  • How long is Camp Spehar?

    • Our course is 6 days and 5 nights.

  • What time of year is Camp Spehar?

    • Camp Spehar is conducted directly following Christmas and lasting through the New Year. Annual dates will vary, please see CampSpehar.com for current dates.

  • What are the qualifications of the instructor staff?

    • Each staff member is a US military veteran that has honorably served in Iraq and Afghanistan, prior Master Training Specialist qualified and first responder / lifeguard certified. Active duty special operators will guest instruct when their schedules permit.

  • What is the curriculum taught at Camp Spehar?

    • Camp Spehar includes a hybrid of in classroom learning and outdoor practical application. Camp Spehar covers topics such as mental toughness, core values/ethics, special operations history, nutrition and basic running and swimming programming.

  • Is there an age requirement?

    • All candidates must be 16 years and older. Candidates who are 15 years old may apply, but must have a waiver completed by a member of the instructor staff. Custom camps can be run for younger groups and groups of older professionals.

  • How do I get to the camp?

    • Out-of-state candidates will fly into the New Orleans International Airport where a Camp Spehar representative will await them at baggage claim.  The camp representative will assist the candidate in contacting their parents or guardian at that time.

    • Local candidates will meet at Bass Pro Shops, 175 Bass Pro Blvd. Denham Springs, LA 70726, where a Spehar bus will pick them up.

  • May I leave or have visitors to the camp?

    • Camp Spehar tries to emulate a real boot camp atmosphere, so candidates may not leave or have visitors to the camp.

  • May I speak with my family?

    • To promote the atmosphere of real boot camp, all cell phones are turned into instructor staff at the beginning of training. Parents will receive a contact list of all of our staff, as well as the address of the facility in case of emergency.

  • What items do I need to bring?

    • A sea bag list is mailed to all candidates once registration is complete. Other than a positive mental attitude, the most important item needed with you on arrival is a worn-in pair of combat boots.

  • Where will I be sleeping?

    • Students will sleep in military barracks.  All fresh linens are provided and the building is heated and cooled.  

  • What if I have allergies or dietary restrictions?

    • Camp Spehar will assist in making medical and dietary accommodations. Any medical conditions, allergies or dietary restrictions should be disclosed on the Medical Questionnaire prior to arrival.

  • What physical shape should I be in to attend Camp Spehar?

    • All potential candidates are recommended to be in their best physical shape possible prior to arrival. This is not only for your protection, but for the safety of those in your boat crew as well.

  • What swimming abilities are required to attend Camp Spehar?

    • We recommend that each candidate be comfortable in the water. During pool evolutions, the students will be organized into water proficiency groups and will each have an instructor coaching them. In other words, if you can’t swim, that’s ok, you will participate in alternative activities. Every instructor is lifeguard certified.

  • There is a water portion listed with the camp, what is the temperature of the water?

    • All pool evolutions take place at PARDS or the Boys and Girls Club indoor pools, which are heated.

    • The temperature of the lakes on Spehar grounds ranges from 55-65 degrees. Understand that you will be in and out of this frigid water all week.

  • What if I get sick or injured during Camp Spehar?

    • We have EMTs present for all of our training events for immediate response. There is also a fire department on site for any first responder-necessary trauma or injury related issues. The nearest hospital is Slidell Memorial, which is a twelve-minute drive.  There is a second hospital, Ochsner Medical, that is only 13 minutes away and we coordinate with their helicopter life flight personnel prior to all course dates. The hospital and helicopter personnel are also provided the 10 digit grid coordinate of Spehar. Minor sniffles, cuts and bruises are expected during this intense week. Our staff will be standing by to address any medical issue in order to keep the problem at its lowest level. All illnesses or injuries will be reported to parents or guardians as soon as possible.

  • What happens if I quit during Camp Spehar?

    • If a candidate no longer wishes to participate in training, he will be taken out of training and afforded to the opportunity to talk with an instructor about his final decision. If after counseling the student decides to quit, they will ring the bell 3 times. At this time, they will be removed from the class. Candidates will have the opportunity to stay on the property, observe all academic material and help their classmates from a support role only. Candidates may also go home if they wish.

  • What will Camp Spehar prepare me for?

    • Camp Spehar gives candidates a glimpse of the rigors of special operations selection courses and the tools needed to overcome future mental and physical barriers.

  • May I take pictures at Camp Spehar?

    • Candidates may only take pictures on graduation day when electronic devices are returned.

  • May my family attend graduation?

    • Yes, all family members are encouraged to assist in the celebration of this accomplishment. A light buffet style meal and a tour will be provided.

  • What is the cost of Camp Spehar? What does the cost include?

    • Currently the price for one week of training is $500. This price includes 6 days and 5 nights of lodging, food, training equipment, uniforms, pool and obstacle course rental, classroom supplies and instruction from various Special Operators. Payment plans can be discussed as well.  Any surplus funds will be redistributed to the candidates.

  • When is the deadline to register?

    • The registration deadline for Camp Spehar will vary each year. Please check CampSpehar.com for the updated deadline. Registration is encouraged as soon as possible to reserve your spot.
